PROVIDES HEAVENLY LOOK FOR THE POPE JOHN PAUL II CULTURAL CENTER AT CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY Working with Edwin Schlossburg Design of New York, Willmetter, Illinois-based Cable Design, Inc., an innovative cable and display design firm, created a heavenly look for visitors at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. Before visitors walk into the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center, visitors descend down a three-level ramp. Cable Design was hired to install luma-site, a curtain of panels similar in texture to a fiberglass product. The panels gave the illusion of texture and depth; yet as a giant room divider. “These panels created a nice defuse light in the exhibition space as opposed to a harsh beam of sunlight,” says Michael Lapthorn, exhibit designer at Edwin Schlossburg Design. “The panels, spanning from the ceiling to the floor, are the largest cable installation I have ever seen.” “Luma-site looks like rice paper, but is no transparent at all,” says Kathleen Pope, president, Cable Design. “In fact, Luma-site isn’t really thin at all, but it transmit light easily and changes color depending how the light hits it.” In addition to creating this floating wall, Cable Design created signage, shelving and changeable displays. A studio workshop had been set up in the museum for people to create simple crafts. The displays allowed museum employees to frequently change the art work the visitors have created. For more than 20 years, Cable Design has been creating unique designs and providing products and services to architects, commercial developers and people in the design industry. Pope determines what type of metals, materials, structural and decorative cabling, signage, glass and low-voltage lighting will be used.
